History of INMC building

Institute of New Media and Communications (INMC)

The Institute of New Media and Communications (INMC) was established in June 1991 by Professor Lee Chung-woong from the Department of Electronics Engineering, along with faculty members specializing in communications and broadcasting. Recognizing the critical importance of the IT industry, particularly in communications and broadcasting, to Korea’s future industrial development during the late 1980s and early 1990s, the institute was founded to promote education and research in the field of communications and broadcasting.

Research Institute Building

The INMC’s building was constructed with the support of Goldstar Co., Ltd.(now LG Group). Construction began on November 18, 1993, and the building was completed on June 1, 1996. The institute occupies a standalone building with a total floor area of 5,934m², consisting of one basement level and four above-ground floors.

Research Institute Organization

The INMC is led by a director and operates with advisory bodies, including the Operating Committee and the Advisory Board, which offer guidance on the institute’s operations, policies, and research. The institute has practical departments such as the Planning & Operations Department, along with four initial research divisions. These divisions were later renamed to more accurately reflect their specific focus areas: Communication Systems, Communication Networks, Signal Processing, and Microwave Research.

In May 2023, in response to the rapidly evolving research landscape in New Media Communications, the INMC reorganized its structure into five specialized research divisions: Wireless Information Technology Division, Intelligent Networks Division, Multimedia Signal Processing Division, High-Speed Radio Technology Division, Convergence AI Division.
